Plus, who doesn’t want to be their own boss? From the outside, freelancing looks a lot like working a regular job, except you can do it from your bed or from the beach if you so choose. The reality is more complicated, with added responsibilities, costs, and considerations that many freelancers aren’t aware of until it’s too late. Before you quit your job and strike out alone as a freelancer, consider the following 10 questions and see how easily you answer them: Do you know what you’re worth? Operation Temperer The Pros and Cons Explained The government has recently announced plans for a new defence strategy, that would see thousands of armed troops taking to the streets. This is known as Operation Temperer. The plans come in the wake of a traumatic month for global security, which has seen an unprecedented rise in terrorism. In this blog, we’ll investigate the new plans, and the benefit that they’ll have.What is Operation TempererIn short, the plan is as follows. In the event that terrorists launch a Paris-style attack on Britain, thousands of armed troops will a) take to the streets b) be on hand to deal with said incident. Currently, the armed forces can call upon up to 5,000 servicemen/women to deal with incidents such as this, known as Operation Temperer, but the plans announced look set to double this figure. In conjunction with this, the government is also significantly increasing its digital intelligence efforts, in order to intercept communication between terrorists. It is hoped that by (controversially) cracking down on encrypted messaging services, such as snapchat, the government will be able to prevent an attack from happening on British soil.Why are they being implemented?We are all aware of the terrorist threat facing Britain, but senior officials in the police force have made it extremely clear that â€" should an attack such as those committed on French soil take place in Britain â€" the police force would struggle to find the resources to deal with it adequately. The recent drop in the number of armed police only compounds this issue. While the aim, obviously, is not to scare the public, it stands to reason that at this point â€" a military presence would reassure British citizens. As shown in the Paris attacks, having armed forces ready to respond is extremely valuable. The better we are prepared, the more lives can be saved.The problem with the planThe unfortunate reality is that it’s extremely difficult to stop the type of attacks that took place in France. You cannot p olice every area of the country, 100% of the time. Does having the army on hand change this? Not really. The army might well be of great use in the aftermath of an assault, but the chances of them being particularly effective during, are very slim. Will the army will be there to stop terrorists charging into a building? With the increased threat to ‘soft targets’, the reality is that you don’t have people policing these areas. You certainly won’t see armed guards patrolling outside of smaller, countryside train stations or even smaller coastal towns and cities. The government is working so hard on making London secure, that other more vulnerable targets have been forgotten. This is a naïve attitude to take, and is exactly what has led to so much shock in the wake of Paris, from people who believed that this ‘was someone else’s problem’. Even now, there is a staunch refusal from many people to accept that they are in danger from terrorism. There is a fine line between refusing to live your life in fear, and wilfully ignoring the current global situation. Those in the latter camp will need to face facts sooner rather than later.The government faces an impossible task. How not to network with a recruiter Every several days or so, I get a short email or LinkedIn message from someone I am typically connected to on LinkedIn saying something along the lines of: “I’m looking for [this type of role]. Do you have anything for me?” and a CV/resume is attached. I wouldnt mind so much if the person knew what kind of roles I was recruiting for and their experience was actually relevant, but most of the time this isnt the case. Often the job seeker is quite senior and should really know better at this stage of their career.  Why is this a wrong way to network with a recruiter? Firstly, it’s very generic â€" sometimes my name isn’t even mentioned in an email and it is quite clear this is a template. Sometimes the same letter is sent to several recruiters on bcc! Way to get your email deleted immediately. Secondly, it is all about what you want. I do receive such emails a LOT but this approach doesn’t make me want to help this person. So how should you follow up instead? Most importantly, personalize your message. Always include the recipient’s name and if it’s been a long time since we’ve connected, remind me how we met. I have interacted with thousands of candidates in my 11 years in recruitment and have almost 15,000 connections on LinkedIn right now â€" I am simply unable to remember everyone, especially if we connected 5 years ago. Don’t make me do the work for you. If we’ve met before, give me an update of what you’ve been up to since then and tell me what specifically you’re looking for. Let’s suppose we’re connected but haven’t spoken much before, and you’re looking for a new career opportunity in the industry I recruit in. I’d like to see a brief summary of your expertise and key achievements and to know exactly what kind of an opportunity you’re looking for. It also really annoys me when candidates clearly don’t bother reading my LinkedIn profile before contacting them, because if they did, they wouldn’t think I can help with jobs in oil and gas industry or something  equally irrelevant to  what I do. And finally, don’t always ask for help â€" offer to help as well. You can offer to connect me to someone, send an interesting article or make a referral for one of my recruitment projects. If you’re not sure how to help, you can always make a general “please let me know if I can help in any way” offer. When you send me an email suggesting you’ve read my profile or have done the research on the company I am working for, I will want to help you. I might not always be able to do it immediately, but I’ll be so much more likely to consider you when I have a suitable role open or I’ll refer you to someone else. When I worked for Expedia for 4 years, I’ve hired so many people that way â€" they sent a thoughtful email and even if I did not have a role available for them immediately, if they stayed in contact, sometimes a perfect role would come up at a later date. Following up regularly is important, too. I don’t mean chasing the recruiter weekly â€" but staying at the front of their mind will ensure that the recruiter is more likely to think of you when a suitable role does become available.
